·New Foodservice database online

Welcome to our newsletter "Food & Retail" of September 2006. The newsletter is free of charge and we aim at sending it to you each month. In each newsletter you will be informed about new publications, services and market overviews.
Our original background is food but that does not mean only supermarkets today. Food service, fashion, furniture, footwear etc. are studied and reported in the same practical way. We hope that our newsletters, reports and the new online service will support you in your vision on future food & retail developments.

Up to 50% of food Out of Home ?

While business in Food retail is a battle with stable or one digit growth markets, the situation in Foodservice is quite different. Several sources in the USA already published that 50% of all food is eaten out of home.  Many new foodservice chains are growing at incredible speed and the growth targets are phenomenal.  Fast growth in this sector is also due to the use of franchising creating a strong financial source for starting new outlets. Many companies however have problems attracting new franchisees. Sectors like sandwiches (Subway) and coffee-bars (Starbucks) encounter high interest while pizza chains see the interest of new franchisees decline in many countries. There is no doubt however that Europe goes to 50% out of home even if it will take 15-20 years.
It is amazing to see that many successful companies and concepts in this market are not older than 15 years. Compare that to the history of many retailers which is going back 50 years or more. This Foodservice market creates new options for concepts by existing foodservice companies, food manufacturers but also retailers who gradually change part of their stores in cafetaria concepts, sandwich stores, coffee bars etc. We even think that many retailers today will not be retailers in 10 years from now, but active foodservice operators.

We published our Foodservice report last year on all these different operators and concepts and we saw a strong interest in this report. But we also received hundreds of questions on operators, sectors and countries that made us aware that our customers wanted more.
We therefor developed www.foodservice-index.com

The database can be visited on www.foodservice-index.com and every visitor can directly see the names of over 1400 operators, sorted by country and sector. Although a breakdown in types of operators is not easy we use the following 7 sectors:
- Coffee bars and pubs
- Fast Food/ QSR
- Restaurants, table service and self service
- Hotels
- Road catering ( motorway + rail) and airport catering
- Contract +event catering and airlines
- Wholesalers, delivery and Cash&Carry
Of most companies a full profile with address, turnover, number of outlets etc. is available for subscribers.
At present all major West European countries are reported as well as USA and Australia. Soon Russia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and even China and Japan will  be added.

The cost of subscription/membership is 1475  euro per year. In view of the increase of operators and countries in the database it will soon be less then 1 euro per operator profile.
